Hypnosis consultations for living better with Pain

Living with pain that lasts is much more than the pain itself: it is sleep getting worse, dreading the next episode, activities dropped one by one, morale wearing thin.

Our hypnotherapists work with people across Quebec and online who are under medical follow-up for lasting pain, with one clear and honest goal: improving your day-to-day comfort and quality of life, alongside your medical follow-up, never in its place.

Your doctor first, always

Pain is a signal, and a signal gets examined: our support is for people whose pain has been assessed by a doctor and who are being followed for its cause.

If that has not happened yet, it is the first step: see your family doctor or, failing that, the Guichet d'accès à la première ligne.

We will ask you about it at the very first contact: it is a mark of seriousness, not a formality. And if your pain changes, increases or comes with new signs while we are working together, the reflex stays the same: your doctor first.

How Hypnosis can help modulate the perception of pain

What we work on: the experience of pain, not its medical cause

The science shows it: pain is constructed in the brain, which integrates the body's signal but also attention, emotion and tension.

Your pain is entirely real, and that is precisely what makes the experience of it partly modulable. Pain that lasts almost always installs the same gearing: it generates stress and apprehension, stress tightens the muscles and puts the nervous system on alert, tension amplifies the perception, sleep deteriorates and lowers the tolerance threshold further still.

Our therapeutic hypnosis support works on every link in that circle: deep relaxation, learned and then anchored so it is available at will; settling the apprehension of difficult episodes; restoring sleep; and supporting morale, because discouragement amplifies the experience of pain. Without ever touching the medical cause, which remains your care team's business, what often changes is your whole relationship with the pain.

Self-hypnosis: becoming self-sufficient day to day

This is the heart of our approach to pain that lasts: most of it happens between sessions, at home.

You learn concrete tools: quick relaxation, techniques for putting some distance between you and the sensations, getting through the harder moments… practised first in session, then on your own.

The aim is a transfer of skill: that you become, day to day, your own resource. Three to six sessions are usually enough to install those tools.

While you wait for a specialist appointment

This is a Quebec reality: waiting times for a pain clinic or for certain specialists are sometimes counted in months. That wait does not have to be dead time or a stretch of discouragement. Working now on your relaxation, your sleep and your relationship with a painful daily life means arriving at that specialist appointment in better shape and better equipped. Alongside the medical pathway, never instead of it: keep every one of your appointments.

What Hypnosis offers in living better with pain

The life situations we support

Alongside medical follow-up, people living with:

  • migraines: tools to call on from the first warning signs, settling the apprehension between episodes;
  • fibromyalgia: the tension-exhaustion circle, sleep, winning back activities, and having an experience long misunderstood acknowledged;
  • back pain that lasts: muscular relaxation, getting comfortable with movement again when the fear of moving has settled in;
  • lasting digestive discomfort;
  • or going through an illness and its treatments: dreaded tests, sleep, morale, the stress of appointments.

And when it is fear of medical care (the dentist, blood tests…) that delays treatment, we work on that too, see Fears & phobias.

Your medication: one single rule

Never change your medication on your own initiative, neither up nor down, even if you feel a great deal better. If your comfort improves to the point of considering an adjustment, that is excellent news… to bring to your doctor or your pharmacist, who alone decide. This collaboration works very well when everyone stays in their own lane: the treatment is theirs, day-to-day well-being is ours.

To go further

We are neither doctors, psychologists, nor psychotherapists. Our services are rooted in helping relationships and well-being: they constitute neither treatment nor psychotherapy (a regulated act in Quebec), and they never replace medical or psychological care. Any pain should be assessed by a doctor, and no medication should be changed without the advice of your doctor or pharmacist.
