Stress, anxiety, anguish, panic: where do you start?
These words get used as synonyms, and that is the first source of confusion. They describe different realities, which do not call for the same kind of support: stress answers a real, present pressure; anxiety anticipates a vague danger; performance stress comes up in the face of something that will be assessed. And when one of those three keeps you awake, that is another job again.
This page helps you identify your situation, then points you to the right support, with a practitioner in your region, in our offices or online.
Identify your situation
| What you are going through | Your page |
|---|---|
| A stretch of real pressure: overload, deadlines, conflict, a move. You are coping, but your body no longer comes back down. | Stress management |
| A mind that spins with no particular object, an endless run of "what ifs", rumination in the evening, worry that persists even when everything is fine. | Easing anxiety |
| You know your subject, but the moment you are assessed (exam, interview, competition) it all falls apart: your mind goes blank, your voice shakes. | Performance stress |
| You struggle to fall asleep, you wake at 3 a.m., your brain restarts the moment your head hits the pillow. | Sleep and insomnia |
Do you recognize yourself in several rows? That is the most common case, and here is why.
What they share: a nervous system that no longer comes back down
Behind these four situations, the same mechanism.

Faced with a threat, whether real or only imagined, the body switches to alert mode: heart rate up, breathing high in the chest, muscles tense. A remarkably effective survival system, built for brief dangers.
The trouble starts when the alarm no longer switches off. Prolonged stress tires the nervous system, which becomes more reactive, and therefore more anxious. Anxiety damages sleep, and lack of sleep lowers your resistance to stress. Each piece feeds the others, which is why people rarely arrive with a single symptom.
What that means for you: start with whatever weighs the most today. Working on one of these links often lightens the others on its own, and the first contact is there precisely to do that sorting.
Neighbouring situations
Your difficulty is not in the table? It may belong to one of these pages:
- A large fear focused on one specific situation, such as flying, elevators or animals → Fears & Phobias
- Exhaustion tied to work, with cynicism and a tiredness the weekend no longer repairs → Professional coaching
- Emotions that are hard to regulate, such as anger or high sensitivity → Emotional regulation
- A more general lack of confidence → Self-confidence
- A child or a teenager concerned → Hypnosis for Children · Hypnosis for Teens
What Hypnosis offers for Stress and Anxiety
What hypnosis brings, whichever door you came in through
- Learning to come back down: the hypnotic state activates the nervous system of relaxation, which becomes hard to reach when the alarm has been running for months. Every session is practice, and that capacity strengthens like a muscle.
- Becoming self-sufficient: self-hypnosis is taught from the first sessions, a few minutes wherever you are, in the car or at bedtime. It is the heart of the approach.
- Working on what feeds the problem: perfectionism, being unable to say no, anticipating everything. Often the real work, and the most lasting.
What hypnosis does not do
It removes neither your workload, nor your deadlines, nor stress itself, which stays useful in reasonable doses. We make no diagnosis, and in Quebec psychotherapy is a regulated act: we are neither doctors, psychologists, nor psychotherapists. Our services are rooted in helping relationships and well-being. If your situation calls for a health professional, we will tell you at the first contact.
When to see a doctor first
See one before or alongside if physical symptoms persist (palpitations, tightness, digestive trouble): they deserve a check-up, because not everything is "just stress". See one as well if the difficulty gets in the way of your daily life, if exhaustion has set in, if your mood has been low for a long stretch, or if alcohol is what keeps you going. Info-Santé 811 can point you in the right direction at any time.

Frequently asked questions about Stress, anxiety, anguish, panic
Stress answers a real, present pressure, and it settles once the situation is resolved. Anxiety anticipates a vague danger and carries on even when everything is fine. Put simply: stress has an object, anxiety runs on empty. Many people live with both, and each one feeds the other.
With whichever weighs the most today, and that is often sleep, because repaired nights improve everything else. Since these difficulties are linked, working on one usually lightens the others. The first contact is there for exactly that sorting.
Three to six for stress or one specific deadline; four to eight for anxiety that has been settled in for a long time. Relief is often felt in the first few, but stability comes with practicing self-hypnosis between appointments.
It depends on your group plan: receipts are issued (counselling, naturotherapy or hypnotherapy depending on the practitioner's affiliation: RITMA, ANN), but not every insurer accepts them. Check your policy, and look at your EAP as well, which is often free and confidential.
Yes, alongside it, and it is a common combination. Two rules: tell your practitioner about your follow-up, and never stop or change your medication without your prescriber. It is also worth mentioning it to your doctor.
The four kinds of support in this theme
- Stress Management: bringing the pressure down, recovering the ability to rest.
- Easing Anxiety: quieting the mind that anticipates and ruminates.
- Performance Stress: exams, interviews, competitions — delivering what you know.
- Sleep and Insomnia: breaking the circle between difficult nights and tense days.
We are neither doctors, psychologists, nor psychotherapists. Our services are rooted in helping relationships and well-being: they constitute neither a diagnosis, nor treatment, nor psychotherapy (a regulated act in Quebec), and replace no medical or psychological care. If you are suffering psychologically, seek help: Info-Santé 811. In distress: 1 866 APPELLE (1 866 277-3553) or suicide.ca.
