Hypnosis consultations for Emotional Regulation

The anger that comes out too hard with the kids, after a day of holding everything in at the office. The tears rising in a meeting, and the shame that follows. Or the opposite: years of toughing it out, until you no longer quite know what you feel.

Overflowing or shutting everything down: two sides of the same missing piece, emotional regulation, a skill that can be learned, at any age.

Our hypnotherapists work with you anywhere in Quebec, in office or online: feel just as much, overflow less, without turning into someone cold.

Understanding Emotions

Emotions are messengers

No emotion is "negative": fear signals a possible danger, anger a boundary crossed, sadness a loss to take in…

That is exactly what Quebec's public health resources say: normal, useful reactions that only become a problem through their intensity, their duration or their mismatch with the situation (CIUSSS de la Capitale-Nationale — Gouvernement du Québec, in French), and whose management can be learned (Santé Montérégie, in French).

The aim is therefore never to suppress emotions: it is to turn the volume down without cutting the sound. A pure emotion works like a wave: it rises, peaks and settles within a few minutes if you let it run its course. What makes it last is what we add to it:

  • The struggle ("I shouldn't be feeling this"),
  • rumination that relaunches the wave on every lap,
  • the shame of feeling it, two emotions for the price of one.

For the full mechanism (the wave, forbidden emotions, over-control), see our complete guide on solutionshypnose.com.

Why emotions overflow in you

Why it overflows, or why it shuts down

Person shouting, « FRAGILE » tape across the face
  • The overload.
    A swallowed emotion does not disappear: it gets stored. Weeks of "it's fine" and "no time for this" fill the pressure cooker. And the drop that makes it blow is never the real cause, just the last one in.
  • Forbidden emotions.
    "Boys don't cry," "don't be such a crybaby," "we don't complain, we carry on"… A forbidden emotion comes out in disguise: sadness as anger, anger as tears, or it turns back against you.
  • High sensitivity.
    Feeling more strongly, more quickly, for longer, and absorbing other people's emotions like a sponge. It is a trait, not a flaw: around 20 to 30% of people are concerned, with real strengths (empathy, intuition) and costs when it is not worked with. We devote a whole page to it.
  • Depleted ground.
    Sleep debt, stress that lasts, mental load, and a winter that weighs on morale: the overflow threshold drops (see Sleep and Stress & Anxiety). And if your mood collapses markedly every winter, or lastingly, talk to your doctor, it matters.
  • Over-control.
    "Keeping it professional," letting nothing show, being "the solid one in the family": numbness does not sort through anything, it cuts off joy as well, and the muzzled emotion comes back as tension, a clenched jaw, poorer sleep, irritability. Many people come the day they can no longer answer "what are you feeling?". That can be relearned.

What Hypnosis Offers for Emotional Regulation

Our approach: a wave is something you surf

In three to six sessions, generally:

  • learning to recognise the wave earlier (every emotion has its physical warning signs, and the earlier you spot them, the more choice you have);
  • surfing instead of drowning: training in a hypnotic state to move through an emotion safely, letting it rise, observing it, letting it settle;
  • turning down the volume of an overwhelming emotion without silencing it (the message stays, the tidal wave goes);
  • lifting the old prohibitions: revisiting gently and at a distance, with your adult resources, the scenes where feeling was not allowed (never by "reliving" anything painful);
  • learning to say it: speaking up while it is small rather than exploding once it is large (see Self-Confidence).

Self-hypnosis becomes your everyday tool: regulation takes hold in the real waves.

And for children and teens, all of this is learned through stories and tools cut to their size: see Hypnosis for Children and Hypnosis for Teens.

When to see a psychologist or a doctor first

See a psychologist (a member of the Ordre des psychologues du Québec) or a doctor first if:

  • overwhelming emotions last for weeks and interfere with how you function;
  • your mood has collapsed along with your interest in everything;
  • your emotions are tied to a traumatic event;
  • you feel a total emotional emptiness that worries you…

We will tell you so from the first contact, and our support can follow as a complement.

Frequently asked questions about hypnosis for emotional regulation

We are not physicians, psychologists or psychotherapists.
