How much does a hypnosis session cost in Quebec, and is it covered?

A hypnotherapist's fees are not regulated: depending on the city, the practitioner's experience and the length of the session, prices vary a lot from one office to another. At Solutions Hypnose, a session of about one hour usually costs $135, taxes included. The first session is often longer, 1 hour to 1 hour 30, and costs $135 to $185 depending on the practitioner.

Whether it is reimbursed depends on your insurance contract. Our practitioners provide naturopathy insurance receipts, issued under RITMA for most and under ANN for some, but not every plan accepts them. Check your coverage with your insurer before the first session: it is the only way to get a reliable answer.

A white question mark inside a blue circle

The cost of a hypnosis session at Solutions Hypnose

There is no regulated rate for hypnosis: each hypnotherapist sets their own fees. From one office to another, prices vary with the city, the practitioner's experience, the length of the session and what it includes. Comparing two rates only makes sense for sessions of the same length.

A session of about one hour costs $135, taxes included, with most of our practitioners in Quebec. That is the rate for the majority of appointments.

The first session is often longer. It is a time to get to know each other, understand what brings you and set your goals, before a first piece of work under hypnosis. Depending on the practitioner, it lasts 1 hour to 1 hour 30 and costs $135 to $185.

Some partners offer longer sessions or packages for certain goals: 1 hour 30 sessions throughout, for example, or a quit-smoking package that combines two appointments close together.

Each practitioner's exact rate is listed on their profile, under "Our team". You know it before you book, with no surprise at the end of the session.

Sessions with children

With a child, the part under hypnosis is often shorter than with an adult. The consultation is not limited to it, though: it also includes the conversation with the parents, to understand the situation, set the goal with the child and review what is changing at home. With most of our practitioners who see children, the session lasts 50 minutes to an hour, at the $135 rate. Some see children from age 6, others from age 10: the age is stated on their profile.

Naturopathy insurance receipts: RITMA or ANN

Our practitioners provide a naturopathy insurance receipt for each session. Most issue it as members of RITMA, a group of complementary medicine practitioners; some issue it under ANN. The type of receipt is often stated on the practitioner's profile; if not, ask us before you book.

RITMA's code of ethics governs these receipts: the practitioner must post a clear rate schedule, issue an insurance receipt if you ask for one, and fill it out properly and completely.

A receipt does not guarantee reimbursement. Receipts for helping professions, which include hypnosis, are not accepted by every plan. Some contracts cover complementary care under a separate benefit, with a yearly maximum. Others cover none. Only your contract can tell you.

Questions to ask your insurer before the first session

A call or a message to your insurer, or to human resources if your insurance comes through your employer, is often enough. Here is what to ask:

  • "Does my plan cover naturopathy receipts issued by RITMA? And those issued by ANN?"
  • "How much is reimbursed per session, and what is the yearly maximum?"
  • "Do I need a referral from a physician to be reimbursed?"
  • "Are video sessions covered the same way as office sessions?"

Write down the answer and the name of the person who gave it to you. If your practitioner issues ANN receipts and your plan only covers RITMA, or the other way around, let us know: another member of the team may be able to see you.

Hypnotherapy is not psychotherapy. In Quebec, since June 2012, psychotherapy has been reserved for psychologists, physicians and holders of a psychotherapist's permit, including when it is done through hypnosis. Our practitioners are neither psychologists nor psychotherapists, and a hypnotherapy receipt is not a psychotherapy receipt. If you are going through distress, depression or a diagnosed condition, talk to your physician or a psychologist first: hypnosis can support ongoing care, never replace it. Suicidal thoughts: 988, anywhere in Canada, 24/7.

How much does a full course of sessions cost?

The price of one session does not tell the whole story: you also need to know how many sessions to plan for. No one can tell you before meeting you, and an honest practitioner will not announce a number before the first appointment. You discuss it together at the end of the first session, and review it along the way.

For typical ranges by topic, read our article How many hypnosis sessions do you need?. It also explains what makes support longer or shorter.

Between sessions, you leave with a short self-hypnosis exercise to practise at home. It costs nothing, and it is often what makes the changes last.

Where would you like to consult?

You now know the rates and the questions to ask your insurer. All that is left is to choose the practitioner who suits you.

Our hypnotherapists see clients in their offices across Quebec, and by video wherever you are. Other answers about rates and sessions are in our FAQ. Have a question? Contact us, or book an appointment.

Hypnosis as practised by the members of Solutions Hypnose is a complementary support approach. It is neither a medical act, nor a diagnosis, nor psychotherapy in the regulatory sense, and it in no way replaces a consultation, follow-up or treatment prescribed by a health professional.

Our practitioners do not assess and do not treat mental disorders or illnesses. They never ask for an ongoing treatment to be stopped or changed: that decision rests exclusively with your doctor.

No result can be guaranteed. The testimonials and examples presented on this page describe individual experiences and do not predict what you will experience.
