Stress and anxiety: life in Montreal

A packed metro at rush hour, orange cones and detours on the way to work, rent that keeps climbing, workdays that spill into the evening: life in a big city asks you to stay on alert all the time. Over time, the body stays switched on even when there is nothing left to deal with.

Montreal also has rhythms of its own: long winters, daylight fading from November, the September rush, studying far from family, settling into a new country. You can be surrounded by two million people and still feel alone. Many of our clients describe the same thing: they seem to be coping, but they sleep badly, keep going over things, and run out of steam faster than before.

Stress, anxiety, panic: how they differ

  • Stress is a normal reaction to change. It becomes a problem when it settles in: stress hormones stay high, and sleep, digestion or the body's defences pay the price.
  • Anxiety is the anticipation of a future threat, with worry and muscle tension. It becomes overwhelming when it outgrows the real danger: thoughts that keep coming back, restless nights, situations you start to avoid.
  • Panic is an intense, mostly physical fear, often with no identifiable cause. It can take the form of anxiety attacks or panic attacks.
  • Performance anxiety shows up when you feel judged: at work, in your studies, on stage, in sport or in social situations.

If anxiety keeps you from functioning day to day, talk to your doctor or a psychologist first. Hypnosis can support that care, never replace it.

Stress in children and teenagers

Montreal kids and teens live at a fast pace too: exams, starting high school or CEGEP, back-to-back activities, screens late at night, how others see them at school and on social media. In young people, stress often shows up in the body: stomach aches, trouble falling asleep, nightmares, irritability, not wanting to go to school.

Bonjour.

A bientôt.

Managing stress better

Hypnosis is a state of deep physical and mental relaxation. You discover it in session, then learn to return to it on your own, thanks to the anchors set up together.

Knowing your typical stressors, the inner talk and the emotional reactions that come with them, lets you see them coming and respond better.

Easing the symptoms of anxiety

Spotting your worst-case scenarios and the signs that an anxiety or panic attack is coming helps you take back control sooner: over your sleep, over the attacks, over your self-confidence.

Stopping the mental hamster wheel: when thoughts keep looping, when you dwell on the past or can no longer make choices, hypnosis quiets that anxious inner voice. "It's not possible" gives way to new options.

With children and teens

Hypnosis speaks to them naturally: it draws on imagination and play, in sessions adapted to their age. They leave with simple tools they can use on their own, at home, before an exam or at bedtime, and parents are involved along the way. If symptoms persist, talk to your pediatrician or family doctor first.
